Here's what we look for:
- Materials like stainless steel, glass, cast iron, and ceramic
- 100% PFAS-free nonstick coatings, with ceramic tested for heavy metals
- Aluminum only if itβs hard anodized, ceramic-coated, or safely encased in stainless
- No plastic in contact with food (but we avoid it wherever possible)

How to Swap to Non-Toxic air fryers:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic air fryers:
What to know about air fryers
Air fryers cook food at high temperatures, so the materials inside the basket and cooking chamber matter a lot. Welpr focuses on what the cooking surfaces are made of, especially nonstick coatings and whether any plastic comes into contact with your food during cooking.
- Many air fryer baskets use nonstick coatings that may contain PFAS (a large family of synthetic chemicals) or are coated with materials that can release compounds at high heat.
- Since air fryers are used frequently and food sits directly on the cooking surface, the materials in the basket are the top priority.
Check your current air fryer
Look at the materials listed for your air fryer's basket and any removable trays or inserts. The product manual, manufacturer's website, or original packaging usually lists what the cooking surfaces are made of.
- Check whether the nonstick coating is described as PTFE-free and PFAS-free β PTFE-free alone does not mean it's free of all PFAS chemicals.
- Look for any Prop 65 warnings that came with the product, which may indicate materials worth noting.
Use your current air fryer more safely
If you're not ready to replace your air fryer, a few simple adjustments can reduce direct contact between food and questionable coatings. These small changes can make a real difference while you plan your next purchase.
- Line the basket with unbleached parchment paper or a stainless steel insert to create a barrier between food and the nonstick coating.
- Avoid using scratched or visibly worn baskets, since damaged coatings are more likely to release material into food.
Choose a cleaner air fryer
Look for air fryers with stainless steel baskets or ceramic-coated baskets that have been tested free of lead, cadmium, and all PFAS. Avoid models where plastic parts are in contact with food or exposed to high heat inside the cooking chamber.
- Stainless steel baskets are the safest option since stainless is non-reactive and holds up well at high temperatures without any coating.
