Here's how to swap to non-toxic all purpose cleaners:
What to know about all purpose cleaners
All purpose cleaners are used frequently and often on surfaces you touch throughout the day — countertops, tables, highchairs, and more. Welpr looks at what's in the formula, whether the ingredients are fully disclosed, and whether the product avoids harsh or unnecessary additives.
- Many conventional cleaners contain undisclosed fragrances, harsh sulfates, or preservatives that don't need to be there.
- Because these products are used often and on high-touch surfaces, the formula matters more than you might expect.
Review what you already use
Check the label on your current all purpose cleaner. Look for a full ingredient list and watch for vague terms like "fragrance" or "proprietary blend" that hide what's actually in the bottle.
- If the label just says "fragrance" or "parfum" without listing the scent source, the formula isn't fully transparent.
- Look for ingredients like bleach, ammonia, quats, parabens, SLS/SLES, phthalates, optical brighteners, or dyes — these are all things Welpr screens out.
Use your current cleaner more safely
If you're not ready to switch yet, small changes in how you use your cleaner can reduce what you breathe in and what stays on your surfaces.
- Spray onto a cloth instead of misting directly onto surfaces — this cuts down on airborne particles you inhale.
- Open a window or turn on a fan while cleaning, and wipe surfaces with a damp cloth afterward to remove residue.
Choose a cleaner replacement
Look for all purpose cleaners with a full, transparent ingredient list and simple, plant-based formulas. Fragrance-free options are ideal, but if scented, the scent should come from essential oils or fully disclosed, third-party certified sources.
- Certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ or MADE SAFE® are a good sign, but check that the brand also lists every ingredient — certifications alone aren't enough.
