How to Swap to Non-Toxic baby toothpaste:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic baby toothpaste:
What to know about baby toothpaste
Baby toothpaste goes directly into your child's mouth, and young children inevitably swallow most of it. That makes the ingredients in baby toothpaste especially important since whatever is in the formula is being ingested regularly.
- Many baby toothpastes contain synthetic sweeteners, artificial flavors, synthetic dyes, or preservatives that aren't ideal for developing bodies.
- Because babies and toddlers swallow toothpaste at nearly every brushing, this is a high-priority product to get right early.
Check what's in your current toothpaste
Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to check the toothpaste you're using for your baby. Take a picture of the ingredient label and Welpr will flag anything worth noting.
- Look at the inactive ingredients list on the back — that's where synthetic sweeteners, artificial flavors, dyes, and preservatives are usually listed.
- If you use different toothpastes for different children, scan each one since formulas can vary a lot even within the same brand.
Use your current baby toothpaste more carefully
If you're not ready to switch right away, you can reduce how much your baby is exposed to by simply using less. A tiny amount is all that's needed for little teeth.
- For babies under three, use only a rice-grain-sized smear of toothpaste per brushing.
- Gently wipe out any excess toothpaste with a damp cloth after brushing to limit what gets swallowed.
Choose a cleaner baby toothpaste
Look for baby toothpastes with simple, recognizable ingredients. The best options skip harsh sulfates, artificial sweeteners & dyes, and questionable preservatives entirely.
- Choose formulas that are free from artificial flavors, synthetic dyes, sulfates, parabens, and PEGs — and make sure every ingredient is clearly listed on the label.
