How to Swap to Non-Toxic baking sheets:

Here's how to swap to non-toxic baking sheets:

What to know about baking sheets

Baking sheets are one of the most-used items in any kitchen, and what they're made of matters because they're in direct contact with your food at high temperatures. Welpr focuses on the core material, any coatings or nonstick finishes, and whether the sheet can leach anything into food during cooking.

  • Sheets made from stainless steel are among the safest options since they're non-reactive and durable at high heat.
  • Nonstick coatings are the biggest area of concern β€” many contain PFAS chemicals (a large family that includes Teflon) that can migrate into food, especially when heated.

Check the baking sheets you already own

Look at the baking sheets you use most often and check what they're made of. The material and any coating are the two things that matter most.

  • Check the packaging, brand website, or product listing for terms like "PTFE-free," "PFAS-free," "nonstick coating," or "ceramic coated" β€” these tell you what's on the cooking surface.
  • If your sheet has a dark nonstick coating and you're unsure what it's made from, treat it as a priority to investigate or replace first.

Use your current baking sheets more safely

If you're not ready to replace your baking sheets right away, a few simple changes can reduce direct contact between your food and the sheet's surface.

  • Line your baking sheet with unbleached parchment paper to create a barrier between food and any coating β€” this is especially helpful for nonstick sheets.
  • Avoid using nonstick baking sheets at very high temperatures (above 450Β°F), and replace any sheets where the coating is chipped, peeling, or visibly worn.

Choose a cleaner baking sheet

When you're ready to upgrade, look for baking sheets made from safe, non-reactive materials. Stainless steel and hard anonized aluminum are durable, long-lasting choices.

  • If you prefer nonstick, look for ceramic-coated sheets that are confirmed free of PFAS, lead, and cadmium β€” and be cautious of vague claims like "green" or "eco-friendly" without specifics.
  • Click the button above to shop Welpr Approved baking sheets.
