WELPRHow to Swap to Non-Toxic body butters:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic body butters:
What to know about body butter
Body butter is a leave-on product that stays on large areas of skin for hours, often applied daily. That combination of frequent use, extended skin contact, and broad coverage makes the formulation worth paying attention to.
- Welpr focuses on what body butters are made of: the base oils and butters, how they're scented, what preservatives are used, and whether the formula includes unnecessary additives.
- Products applied after a shower can absorb more readily into warm, open pores, so what's in the formula matters even more.
Check the body butter you already use
Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to check your current body butter. Take a photo of the ingredient label and Welpr will flag any ingredients that don't meet its standards.
- Start with the body butter you reach for most often or apply over the largest area of skin.
- Look for the word "fragrance" or "parfum" on the label—these often indicate synthetic scenting that isn't fully disclosed.
Get more from your current body butter
If you're not ready to replace your body butter right away, you can still reduce how much your skin absorbs. Small changes in how and where you apply it can make a difference while you transition.
- Use a thinner layer and focus on the driest areas like elbows, knees, and feet rather than covering your whole body.
- Avoid applying right after a hot shower when pores are most open—let your skin cool for a few minutes first.
Choose a cleaner body butter
Look for body butters with simple, short ingredient lists built around natural butters and plant-based oils. Fragrance-free options are the safest default, and any scent should come from essential oils or plant extracts rather than synthetic fragrance.
- Avoid products listing "fragrance," "parfum," parabens, phthalates, PEGs, or BHA/BHT—and look for certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ or MADE SAFE® as a helpful starting point.
