Here's how to swap to non-toxic body oils:
What to know about body oil
Body oil is designed to absorb into your skin and stay there for hours. Because it covers large areas of your body and is used frequently, the ingredients in your body oil get prolonged, direct contact with your skin.
- Oils sit on and soak into skin rather than rinsing off, so what's in the formula matters more than with a wash-off product.
- Synthetic fragrances, unnecessary preservatives, and endocrine disruptors like parabens or phthalates are common in conventional body oils but don't need to be.
Review what you already use
Check the body oils you currently own to see how they measure up. Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to take a picture of the ingredient label and get a quick breakdown of what's in your product.
- Start with the body oil you reach for most often or use on the largest areas of skin — that one has the highest overall exposure.
- Look for red flags on the label like the word "fragrance" or "parfum" without further detail, as well as parabens or PEGs listed in the ingredients.
Use your current body oil more mindfully
If you're not ready to replace your body oil right away, small adjustments can reduce how much your skin absorbs. This is especially worth doing if your current oil contains synthetic fragrance or ingredients you're unsure about.
- Use less product per application — a thin layer absorbs just as well and lowers the amount of any unwanted ingredients sitting on your skin.
- Avoid applying body oil right after a hot shower when pores are more open; let your skin cool slightly first.
Choose a cleaner body oil
The best body oils have simple formulas built around plant-based oils with minimal additional ingredients. Look for products that are fragrance-free or scented only with essential oils or plant extracts.
- Prefer short ingredient lists with recognizable oils like jojoba, coconut, or sunflower — and check that any preservatives are minimal and well-regarded, ideally backed by certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ or MADE SAFE®.
