How to Swap to Non-Toxic cleaning wipes:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic cleaning wipes:
What to know about cleaning wipes
Cleaning wipes combine a cleaning formula with a fabric pad, so both the solution and the material matter. Because wipes are used by hand, your skin is in direct contact with the formula every time you use them. Many conventional wipes contain undisclosed fragrances, harsh preservatives, and surfactants that can linger on surfaces and skin.
- Wipes used daily or on surfaces where food is prepared deserve the most attention since residue stays behind.
- Welpr looks for transparent formulas free from harsh sulfates, quats, bleach, ammonia, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing compounds.
Check the wipes you already have
Flip over your current cleaning wipes and look at the ingredient list or product description. Some brands use vague terms like "proprietary blend" or simply list "fragrance" without any detail, which makes it hard to know what you're actually using.
- Look for red flags like "fragrance" or "parfum" without further disclosure, as well as terms like quats, bleach, ammonia, or optical brighteners.
- Start with the wipes you reach for most often or use on kitchen counters and high-touch surfaces.
Use your current wipes more carefully
If you're not ready to replace your wipes right away, a few small changes can reduce how much of the formula contacts your skin and lingers on surfaces.
- Wear simple household gloves when using wipes that contain strong fragrances or harsh ingredients to limit skin contact.
- After wiping food-prep surfaces like countertops or high chairs, follow up with a damp cloth to remove any residue.
Choose cleaner replacements
Look for cleaning wipes with short, fully disclosed ingredient lists and no added fragrance. If scented, the fragrance should come from essential oils or a fully disclosed, third-party certified source.
- Avoid wipes that list undisclosed fragrance blends, quats, bleach, parabens, phthalates, optical brighteners, or dyes — and favor brands that are transparent about every ingredient.
