What to know about eczema products
Eczema-prone skin is more reactive, so what you put on it matters even more. Welpr focuses on formulation simplicity, gentle ingredients, and avoiding common irritants like synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, and unnecessary additives. Since eczema products are applied directly to irritated skin — often daily and over large areas — choosing clean formulations is a high priority.
- Products that stay on the skin (creams, balms, ointments) deserve the most attention since they sit on compromised skin for hours.
- Even products labeled "for sensitive skin" or "dermatologist recommended" can contain synthetic fragrance, parabens, or harsh preservatives.
Review what you already use
Gather the creams, lotions, balms, and ointments you currently use for eczema and check their ingredients. Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to take a picture of each ingredient label and see which ones contain ingredients worth flagging.
- Start with the product you apply most often or over the largest area of skin — that's where cleaner ingredients matter most.
- Look for "fragrance," "parfum," parabens, or PEGs on the label — these are common in eczema products and are things Welpr flags.
Use your current products more carefully
If you're not ready to replace everything right away, small adjustments can help. Reducing how much product you apply and how often can lower your skin's overall exposure to ingredients you'd rather avoid.
- Apply a thin layer rather than a thick one — a little goes a long way, especially with leave-on creams and balms.
- If you use multiple products (a cleanser, a cream, and an ointment), prioritize upgrading the one that stays on your skin the longest first.
Choose cleaner eczema products
Look for products with simple, short ingredient lists built around soothing, moisturizing bases like plant-based oils, butters, tallow, or beeswax. Fragrance-free is the safest default for eczema-prone skin. Welpr-approved products avoid synthetic fragrance, harsh preservatives, parabens, phthalates, and common irritants.
- If a product is scented, make sure it uses only natural fragrance from essential oils or plant extracts — and be cautious even with those on very irritated skin.
