How to Swap to Non-Toxic foundations:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic foundations:
What to know about foundation
Foundation sits on your face for hours at a time, often applied daily. That combination of frequent use, prolonged skin contact, and proximity to your eyes and mouth makes the formula worth paying attention to.
- Welpr looks at the full ingredient list—pigments, preservatives, fragrance, and any unnecessary additives—to make sure every part of the formula meets clean standards.
- Even "clean" or "natural" foundations can contain synthetic fragrance, harsh preservatives, or pigments that haven't been tested for heavy metals.
Check your current foundation
Pull out the foundations you use most often and scan their ingredient labels. The Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner can take a photo of the label and flag ingredients that may not meet Welpr's standards.
- Start with your everyday foundation first—the one that spends the most hours on your skin matters most.
- Look for the words "fragrance" or "parfum" on the label, which usually signal synthetic fragrance that isn't fully disclosed.
Get more from your current foundation
If you're not ready to replace your foundation yet, a few small changes can reduce what your skin absorbs throughout the day.
- Apply a clean moisturizer or primer underneath to create a light barrier between the foundation and your skin.
- Remove foundation as soon as you're home rather than wearing it into the evening—less time on skin means less overall contact.
Choose a cleaner foundation
Look for foundations with simple formulas, mineral-based pigments, and no synthetic fragrance. Certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ are helpful signals, but Welpr reviews the full ingredient list regardless.
- Choose foundations that are fragrance-free and free from parabens, phthalates, PEGs, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives—and check that pigments are tested for heavy metals.
