How to Swap to Non-Toxic hair bleach:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic hair bleach:
What to know about hair bleach
Hair bleach is a strong chemical product designed to strip color from hair. Because it's applied directly to hair and scalp — sometimes for extended periods — the formulation matters. Welpr looks at what's in the formula, including preservatives, fragrances, and unnecessary additives that can add to irritation beyond what bleaching already requires.
- Hair bleach sits on or near the scalp for 20–45 minutes per session, which increases what your skin absorbs during use.
- Some formulas include synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, or additives like parabens and PEGs that aren't necessary for the bleaching process itself.
Review what you already use
Check the hair bleach products you currently own against Welpr's standards. Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to take a picture of the ingredient label and see what gets flagged.
- Look for "fragrance" or "parfum" on the label — these often indicate undisclosed synthetic fragrance blends.
- Check the developer (peroxide cream) too, not just the powder — developers often contain additional preservatives and additives.
Use your current hair bleach more carefully
Replacing hair bleach right away isn't always practical, especially if you have a session planned. A few small adjustments can reduce unnecessary exposure while you use what you have.
- Apply in a well-ventilated area — open a window or turn on a fan to reduce what you breathe in from the powder dust and chemical fumes.
- Avoid overlapping bleach onto previously lightened hair or directly onto the scalp when possible, and always follow the recommended processing time without going over.
Choose a cleaner hair bleach
Hair bleach is one of the harder categories to make fully clean, but some formulas are significantly better than others. Look for products free from synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, and harsh preservatives. Simpler ingredient lists with fewer unnecessary additives are a good sign.
- Look for bleach kits that are fragrance-free, free from endocrine disruptors, and ideally backed by third-party certifications.
