How to Swap to Non-Toxic hair masks:

Here's how to swap to non-toxic hair masks:

What to know about hair masks

Hair masks are deep conditioning treatments that sit on your hair and scalp for extended periods, giving ingredients more time to absorb. Because they have prolonged contact with your skin and are often used near your face, the formulation matters more than with a quick-rinse product.

  • Many hair masks contain synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, or unnecessary conditioning agents (quats) that can irritate skin over time.
  • Welpr focuses on clean formulations, safe preservatives, and natural or fully disclosed fragrance sources when vetting hair masks.

Review what you already use

Check the hair masks you currently own using the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner. It takes a picture of your ingredient label and flags anything that may not meet Welpr's standards.

  • Look at the ingredient list for "fragrance" or "parfum" — these often indicate undisclosed synthetic fragrance blends.
  • Start with the hair mask you use most frequently, since repeated use means more cumulative exposure.

Use your current hair mask more safely

If you're not ready to replace your hair mask right away, small adjustments can reduce how much your skin absorbs. This is especially worth doing if your mask contains synthetic fragrance or harsh preservatives.

  • Apply the mask mainly to mid-lengths and ends rather than directly on your scalp, where skin absorption is highest.
  • Follow the recommended timing on the label — leaving a mask on longer than directed increases unnecessary exposure.

Choose a cleaner hair mask

Look for hair masks with simple, functional ingredient lists. Fragrance-free options or those scented only with essential oils or plant extracts are a good starting point. Certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ or MADE SAFE® are helpful signals but aren't the only thing Welpr looks for.

  • Avoid products listing "fragrance," "parfum," parabens, PEGs, or harsh sulfates — and look for gentle conditioning agents like behentrimonium methosulfate instead of other quats.
