How to Swap to Non-Toxic interior paint:

Here's how to swap to non-toxic interior paint:

What to know about interior paint

Interior paint covers large surface areas in your home and can release compounds into the air you breathe for weeks or months after application. Welpr looks at the formulation of paints, including what solvents, pigments, and additives are used, as well as whether the paint contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or synthetic fragrances.

  • Paint matters more in rooms where you spend the most time, like bedrooms and living areas, especially for children's rooms and nurseries.
  • Freshly painted surfaces release the most compounds, but some paints can continue off-gassing at low levels long after they appear dry.

Check the paint you already have

Look at the labels on any paint cans you currently own or plan to use. The key things to check are the VOC content, any added fragrances or odor-masking agents, and whether the paint is water-based or solvent-based.

  • Look for a VOC rating on the can, usually listed in grams per liter (g/L) — lower numbers are better, and zero-VOC or low-VOC labels are a good sign.
  • Water-based (latex or acrylic) paints generally contain fewer solvents than oil-based (alkyd) paints.

Paint more safely with what you have

If you are using paint you already own, how you apply it and ventilate the space can make a real difference in what you and your family breathe in. A few simple habits reduce indoor air exposure significantly.

  • Open windows and use an air purifier and fans to create cross-ventilation while painting and for several days afterward, especially in bedrooms.
  • Avoid sleeping in a freshly painted room for at least a week, and keep children and pregnant individuals out of the space until the smell has fully cleared.

Choose cleaner paint options

When buying new paint, look for products with zero-VOC content and transparent ingredient lists. The cleanest options skip synthetic fragrances, odor maskers, and unnecessary chemical additives.

  • Look for paints labeled zero-VOC (under 5 g/L) and be cautious of vague claims like "low odor" or "eco-friendly" without specific VOC numbers to back them up.
