WELPRHow to Swap to Non-Toxic loaf pans:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic loaf pans:
What to know about loaf pans
Loaf pans come in direct contact with your food at high temperatures, which means the material they're made of really matters. Some pans use nonstick coatings, raw aluminum, or other materials that can leach into food during baking. Welpr focuses on what the pan is made of and whether it stays stable under heat.
- Materials like stainless steel, cast iron, glass, and ceramic or stoneware are naturally stable and non-reactive at baking temperatures.
- Nonstick coatings are common on loaf pans but may contain PFAS, a large family of synthetic chemicals used to create slick surfaces.
Check the loaf pan you already have
Look at the packaging, bottom of the pan, or the product listing online to identify what your loaf pan is made of. Pay attention to both the base material and any coating or finish on the cooking surface.
- If the pan has a dark nonstick coating, check whether the brand specifies it as PFAS-free β not just PTFE-free, since PFAS includes thousands of other chemicals beyond PTFE.
- If you have a ceramic-coated loaf pan, look for confirmation that it's been tested free of lead and cadmium.
Use your current loaf pan more safely
If you're not ready to replace your loaf pan right away, a few small changes can reduce what transfers from the pan to your food. This is especially helpful if your pan has a nonstick coating that's scratched or chipping.
- Line the pan with unbleached parchment paper to create a barrier between the coating and your food.
- Retire any pan with a visibly damaged, peeling, or flaking nonstick surface β coatings break down faster once the surface is compromised.
Choose a cleaner loaf pan
The best loaf pans are made from simple, non-reactive materials with no synthetic nonstick coatings. Stainless steel, glass, cast iron, stoneware, and tested ceramic are all excellent choices that hold up well over time.
- If you prefer nonstick, look for ceramic-coated pans that are confirmed free of PFAS, lead, and cadmium β and skip any pan that only claims to be "PTFE-free" without addressing PFAS broadly.
