Here's how to swap to non-toxic nail polish removers:
Nail polish remover is a solvent-based product, and the type of solvent matters. Many removers contain harsh chemicals like toluene, formaldehyde, or synthetic fragrances that can be absorbed through the nail bed and surrounding skin. Because remover is used in close proximity to your face and on bare nails, the formulation deserves attention.
Flip your nail polish remover bottle over and look at the ingredient list. Since this is a personal care product, you can use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to snap a photo of the label and see what gets flagged.
If you're not ready to replace your remover right away, small changes in how you use it can make a difference. Solvents evaporate quickly, so ventilation and contact time are the two biggest things you can control.
Look for removers with simple, fully disclosed ingredient lists. The best options skip toluene, formaldehyde, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, and benzophenones entirely. Fragrance-free formulas with plant-based or soy-based solvents tend to be gentler choices.
