How to Swap to Non-Toxic ovens:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic ovens:
What to know about ovens
Welpr looks at what the inside of your oven is made of and coated with. The interior surfaces, racks, and any nonstick coatings are in direct contact with your food or the air around it, especially at high temperatures.
- Oven interiors are often coated with enamel, ceramic, or nonstick finishes — the type of coating matters because heat can cause certain materials to release residues into the air.
- Ovens are used frequently in most households, so choosing one with cleaner interior materials is a worthwhile long-term investment.
Review the oven you already have
Check your oven's manual or manufacturer website to find out what materials line the interior cavity and coat the racks. Look for details on any nonstick or self-cleaning coatings.
- Search your oven's model number online along with terms like 'interior coating' or 'cavity material' to find specs the manufacturer may not list prominently.
- If your oven has a nonstick-coated interior or racks, check whether the manufacturer confirms the coating is PFAS-free — not just PTFE-free.
Use your current oven more safely
If your oven has a nonstick or unknown interior coating, small changes in how you use it can reduce what you and your family breathe in. You don't need to replace a major appliance right away.
- Turn on your range hood or open a nearby window when using the oven at high temperatures or running a self-cleaning cycle, since these cycles heat far beyond normal cooking temps.
- Use stainless steel, cast iron, or glass bakeware to create a barrier between your food and any coated oven racks or surfaces.
Choose a cleaner replacement
When it's time for a new oven, look for models with interiors made from stainless steel, porcelain enamel, or ceramic coatings that are confirmed free of PFAS, lead, and cadmium. Avoid models that rely on nonstick coatings throughout the cavity.
- Choose brands that are transparent about exactly what their interior coatings are made of and whether they've been tested for heavy metals — vague claims like 'non-toxic coating' without specifics are worth questioning.
