How to Swap to Non-Toxic rugs:
Here's how to swap to non-toxic rugs:
What to know about rugs
Rugs cover large areas of your floor and sit in spaces where you walk, sit, and play — especially kids and pets. Because of that constant proximity, the materials a rug is made from, how it's backed, and what it's treated with all matter. Many conventional rugs use synthetic fibers, chemical backings, and adhesives that can off-gas VOCs into your living space.
- Rugs in high-traffic rooms like living rooms, bedrooms, and nurseries deserve the most attention since you spend the most time near them.
- Backing materials and anti-slip coatings are common sources of off-gassing, not just the fibers you see on top.
Review the rugs you already have
Check the labels or product descriptions of your current rugs. Look for information about fiber content, backing material, and any treatments or coatings applied during manufacturing.
- Flip the rug over and check the care tag — look for terms like 'polypropylene,' 'PVC backing,' or 'stain-resistant treatment,' which may indicate synthetic materials or chemical coatings.
- Start with the rug in the room where you or your family spend the most time, especially nurseries or bedrooms where people are on the floor.
Use your current rugs more safely
Replacing rugs isn't always immediate, especially larger or more expensive ones. A few simple steps can help reduce what off-gasses into your home from rugs you already own.
- Air out a new or existing rug outdoors or in a well-ventilated garage for several days before placing it in a lived-in room.
- Vacuum rugs regularly with a HEPA-filter vacuum to reduce dust and particles that may settle from fiber treatments and backings.
Choose cleaner replacements
Look for rugs made from natural fibers like organic cotton, wool, jute, hemp, or linen. The backing and adhesives matter just as much as the top fibers — choose rugs with natural latex or untreated cotton backings and low- or zero-VOC adhesives.
- Prioritize rugs that are free from PFAS, flame retardants, and synthetic stain treatments — certifications like OEKO-TEX® or GOTS can help confirm this, but look for brands that are transparent about every layer of the rug.
