How to Swap to Non-Toxic scalp rinses & scrubs:

Here's how to swap to non-toxic scalp rinses & scrubs:

What to know about scalp rinses and scrubs

Scalp rinses and scrubs are applied directly to one of the most absorbent areas of your body and left to work before being rinsed off. Because the scalp absorbs ingredients quickly and these products often contain exfoliating acids, harsh surfactants, and synthetic fragrances, the formulation deserves a close look. Welpr looks at what these products are made of, including the exfoliants used, fragrance ingredients, preservatives, and any unnecessary additives.

  • Scrubs that use plastic microbeads can release microplastics into water and onto your skin during use, so what's used to exfoliate matters as much as the rest of the formula.
  • Even though these products are rinsed off, residue can stay on your scalp and travel down to the rest of your hair and skin during your shower.

Review what you already use

Use the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner to scan the label on your current scalp rinse or scrub and check the ingredients. The scanner will flag any ingredients that don't meet Welpr's standards.

  • Look for sulfates, parabens, phthalates, PEGs, synthetic fragrance, and artificial dyes. These are all things Welpr screens out.
  • If your scrub uses physical exfoliants, check whether they're plant-based (sugar, salt, oats) or plastic-based microbeads.

Use your current product more carefully

If you're not ready to replace your scalp rinse or scrub right away, a few small changes in how you use it can reduce what gets absorbed and what rinses down the rest of your body. These adjustments are easy to make and cost nothing.

  • Use a smaller amount and rinse thoroughly so less residue stays on your scalp and skin.
  • Don't leave the product on longer than the instructions say. Extended contact gives ingredients more time to absorb.

Choose a cleaner scalp rinse or scrub

Look for scalp rinses and scrubs with short, simple ingredient lists. The best options use plant-based exfoliants like sugar, salt, or oats, or naturally derived clarifying ingredients like apple cider vinegar, and skip synthetic fragrance, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, PEGs, and microbeads.

  • Be cautious of labels that say "natural" or "clean" without listing every ingredient. Welpr requires full transparency before approving any product.
