Here's how to swap to non-toxic wood stain & finish:
Wood stains and finishes can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — gases that evaporate from the product as it dries and cures. Because these products are often used indoors on furniture, floors, and cabinets, the materials they contain and how they off-gas can affect indoor air quality for days or even weeks.
Look at the labels on any wood stains or finishes you currently own. The key things to check are the base (oil-based vs. water-based), the VOC content listed on the can, and whether synthetic solvents or heavy-metal driers are included.
If you plan to use a product you already have, how and where you apply it makes a real difference in what you breathe in. Good ventilation is the single most important thing you can control.
When shopping for new wood stain or finish, look for water-based formulas with low or zero VOC ratings. Products with simple, plant-based ingredients like linseed oil, tung oil, or natural wax tend to have fewer synthetic solvents.
