How We Vet Bath, Body, Hair & Makeup Products on Welpr
When it comes to what you put on your skin every day, we’re picky. From shampoo to serum to blush, we review every ingredient and brand to make sure it meets our non-toxic standards—so you know exactly what you’re putting on your body.
Here’s what we look for before adding a product to Welpr:
Clean, thoughtful formulations
We love fully natural products, but we’re also realistic. Some synthetics can be safe and effective, so we vet every formula to make sure it meets our standards, whether it’s made with tallow or not. We also avoid products with unnecessary additives or ingredients that don’t serve a purpose.
Fragrance-free comes first
Unscented is our default. If a product is scented, it must use natural fragrance from essential oils or plant extracts—never synthetic “fragrance” or “parfum” unless it’s fully disclosed and third-party certified safe.
Preservatives, only when needed
Preservatives help keep formulas stable, but many can cause irritation. We avoid the harsh ones and only allow minimal amounts of better options, especially when backed by certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ or MADE SAFE®.
Safer pigments + dyes
We prioritize natural mineral pigments but don’t automatically rule out synthetics. If a brand confirms they’re tested for heavy metals, we call that out. If not, we’ll still list what’s used so you can decide what feels right for you.
No harsh quats—except one
We avoid quats like benzalkonium chloride due to their links to irritation and hormone disruption. The only one we allow is behentrimonium methosulfate, a gentle, plant-based conditioning agent with a solid safety profile, especially in rinse-off formulas.
Certifications help, but they’re not everything
We highlight trusted third-party standards like EWG VERIFIED™ and MADE SAFE®, and we love when brands meet EU ingredient restrictions. But certifications alone aren’t enough. Every product goes through a full formula review before it lands on Welpr.
Always free from:
- Endocrine disruptors (like parabens, phthalates, PEGs, BHA, BHT)
- Synthetic fragrance (unless fully disclosed + third-party certified safe)
- Harsh preservatives + formaldehyde-releasers
- Common allergens + skin irritants (like harsh sulfates and surfactants)
- Known carcinogens
- Unnecessary quats (except behentrimonium methosulfate)
When there’s no perfect option
Some categories (like braiding hair or hair bleach) are harder to make fully non-toxic. If nothing meets our full standards, we’ll still choose the safest option we can find and clearly explain what it’s made from and what it’s free from.
And when something does check all our boxes, you’ll see the Welpr Approved certification right on the product card.
