How We Vet Cleaning Products on Welpr
Cleaning products are one of the biggest hidden sources of toxins in the home. At Welpr, we look for formulas that are transparent (no “proprietary blends”), non-toxic, and safe for the people and surfaces they touch.
Fragrance-free comes first
We always prioritize unscented formulas. If a product is scented, it must use essential oils, fruit extracts, or a synthetic fragrance that’s fully disclosed and certified safe by a trusted third party. Products with no added scent at all are tagged fragrance-free.
Limonene + Linalool
These naturally occur in essential oils and can be irritating for some. If they’re in a product, it’s usually in a small amount, clearly labeled, and used in rinse-off formulas. When included, we’ll always call it out.
Certifications matter, but they’re not everything
We highlight third-party certifications like EWG VERIFIED™ and MADE SAFE® when available, but we don’t rely on them. Certifications are helpful, not foolproof. That’s why we review every brand, ingredient, and product ourselves.
Only from transparent brands
We choose brands that are upfront about what’s in their products and how they’re made, especially those committed to ethical sourcing, low-waste production, and fair labor.
Always free from
You won’t find any of these in Welpr Approved cleaning products:
- Synthetic fragrance (unless fully disclosed and third-party certified safe)
- Harsh sulfates (like SLS and SLES), parabens, or quats
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing compounds
- Bleach, ammonia, or undisclosed preservatives
- Phthalates, BHA/BHT, triclosan, or triclocarban
- Harsh ethoxylates (unless plant-based and tested low in 1,4-dioxane)
- Optical brighteners or dyes
When there’s no perfect option
Some categories (like dryer sheets or dusting sprays) are tough to make completely non-toxic. If nothing meets our full criteria, we’ll still share the safest option available, with full transparency about what it contains (and what it doesn’t).
And if a product does meet all of our standards, you’ll see the Welpr Approved certification on the product card.
