How We Vet Furniture on Welpr
Your home should feel like a non-toxic sanctuary, and furniture plays a big role in that. We’re picky about what makes it onto Welpr because the materials around us impact our health way more than most people realize.
Here’s what we look for:
Solid wood
We only list furniture made from solid wood—never MDF, particleboard, or engineered wood. Those are often held together with glues that off-gas formaldehyde and other VOCs.
Low-VOC finishes + glues
We prioritize furniture finished with low- or zero-VOC stains made from plant-based oils or water-based formulas. We also skip adhesives that off-gas VOCs—common in conventional pieces but not something we want floating around our homes.
Clean upholstery only
For upholstered pieces, we look for natural materials like organic cotton, linen, leather, or hemp. If synthetics are used, they must be certified non-toxic and completely free from PFAS, flame retardants, and other harmful chemicals.
Only clean foam
Any foam must be free of formaldehyde, phthalates, flame retardants, and other common toxins. We look for trusted certifications like CertiPUR-US® or GOLS to back it up.
Made-to-order options
Many of the furniture brands we feature offer customization. We only list the safest, most non-toxic options available and if you’re ever unsure what to select, we’re happy to help.
Certifications matter, but they’re not everything
We highlight certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, FSC, GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX®, and MADE SAFE® when they’re available, but we don’t rely on them alone. They’re helpful, but not the whole story. That’s why we vet every product ourselves.
We only feature transparent brands
We love brands that tell you exactly what’s in their furniture and how it’s made, especially those focused on ethical sourcing, low-waste production, and fair labor practices.
Look for the Welpr Approved tag
If a product meets all of our standards (and all furniture on Welpr does), you’ll see the Welpr Approved certification on the product card.
