How We Vet Sunscreens on Welpr
You shouldn't have to choose between protecting your skin and avoiding questionable chemicals. At Welpr, we’re picky about sunscreen because what goes on your skin shouldn’t mess with your hormones.
Here’s what we look for:
Mineral filters only
We stick with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are broad-spectrum mineral filters that sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays. They’re safer, more stable, and way less likely to be absorbed into your body than chemical filters.
No hormone-disrupting UV filters
You won’t find chemical filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, or homosalate here.
They’ve been linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, and environmental damage, and they just don’t make the cut.
Texture and wear matter too
A sunscreen can be clean and wearable. We test for things like white cast, greasiness, pilling, and how it plays under makeup, because what’s the point of a non-toxic sunscreen if you don’t want to put it on?
Third-party tested when possible
We highlight certifications like EWG VERIFIED™, MADE SAFE®, and independent lab testing when a brand offers them. They're not required, but they’re a nice bonus.
Ingredients that meet our personal care standards
Always free from:
- Synthetic fragrance
- Parabens, phthalates, PEGs, sulfates
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
- Artificial dyes
- Undisclosed or vague “proprietary” blends
- Plus, no chemical UV filters (like oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, octocrylene, or homosalate)
Look for the Welpr Approved tag
If a sunscreen meets all of our standards (and every one on Welpr does), you’ll see the Welpr Approved certification on the product card.
