What to know about body lotion
Body lotion is applied to large areas of skin and absorbs throughout the day, making its formulation one of the most important things Welpr evaluates. Because lotion stays on your body for hours, the ingredients sit in direct contact with your skin much longer than a rinse-off product would.
- Welpr focuses on what the lotion is made of: whether the formula uses clean ingredients, how it's scented, and what preservatives or additives are included.
- Daily-use lotions deserve the most attention since frequent application over large skin areas increases overall exposure.
Review what you already use
Check your current body lotions by using the Welpr Personal Care and Cosmetic Scanner. It reads ingredient labels and flags ingredients that don't meet Welpr's standards, like artificial dyes, parabens, phthalates, or harsh preservatives.
- Start with the lotion you use most often or apply over the largest area of your body — that one has the biggest impact.
- Look for the word "fragrance" or "parfum" on the ingredient list — if it's there without further disclosure, the scent is likely synthetic.
Use your current lotion more mindfully
If you're not ready to replace your lotion right away, small changes in how you use it can make a difference. Reducing how much you apply and where you apply it lowers overall skin exposure.
- Use a thinner layer on areas that are less sensitive, and skip applying to broken or freshly shaved skin where absorption is higher.

Choose a cleaner body lotion
Look for lotions with simple, purposeful ingredients — things like plant-based oils, butters, and minimal preservatives. Fragrance-free is the cleanest default, and any scent should come from essential oils or plant extracts rather than synthetic fragrance.
