How to Swap to Non-Toxic woks:

Here's how to swap to non-toxic woks:

What to know about woks

A wok is a high-heat cooking surface that comes in direct contact with your food, so the materials it's made from matter. Some woks use nonstick coatings or reactive metals that can release unwanted substances into food, especially at the high temperatures wok cooking requires. Welpr focuses on what the cooking surface is made of, whether any coatings are truly safe, and how the wok handles intense heat.

  • Woks are used at very high temperatures, which can increase the chance of coatings breaking down or metals reacting with food.
  • Because food sits directly on the cooking surface, the material of your wok is one of the most important factors to consider.

Check the wok you already have

Look at your current wok and identify what the cooking surface is made from. Check the product packaging, any tags, or the manufacturer's website for material details. Welpr does not have a scanner for cookware, so you'll need to review this information yourself.

  • If your wok has a nonstick coating, check whether the brand confirms it is free from PFAS (the entire family of chemicals, not just PTFE or Teflon).
  • If you're unsure what your wok is made of, search the brand and model online — most manufacturers list materials on their product pages.

Use your current wok more safely

If you're not ready to replace your wok right away, a few small changes can help reduce what transfers into your food. This is especially useful if your wok has a nonstick coating that may be wearing down.

  • If your nonstick wok is scratched, chipped, or flaking, avoid using it at high heat and consider retiring it sooner — damaged coatings break down more easily.
  • Use wooden, bamboo, or silicone utensils instead of metal ones to prevent scratching any coated surface.

Choose a cleaner replacement

The best woks are made from simple, non-reactive materials with no synthetic coatings. Carbon steel and cast iron are classic choices — both develop a natural nonstick surface when properly seasoned and handle high heat exceptionally well. Stainless steel is another solid option.

  • Look for woks made from carbon steel, cast iron, or stainless steel with no nonstick coatings — if a wok does have a ceramic nonstick coating, make sure it's tested free of lead, cadmium, and all PFAS.
