We analyzed 826 shampoos and 808 were paraben-free. Only 31 of those, around 4%, met the Welpr Standard, compared with 31 of 826 shampoos overall, around 4%.
| Assessment | Paraben-free shampoos | All shampoos |

| Meets the Welpr Standard | 31 (4%) | 31 (4%) |
| Does not meet the Welpr Standard | 777 (96%) | 795 (96%) |
Choosing paraben-free barely changes the odds of a shampoo meeting the Welpr Standard. In our analysis, transparency issues remained widespread among paraben-free shampoos.
When we say a shampoo is “non-toxic,” we mean it meets the Welpr Standard, our precautionary consumer standard; the shampoo guide explains what that means.
We reviewed ingredient disclosures published by brands and retailers between July 28, 2026 and October 11, 2026.
We checked each shampoo’s disclosed ingredient list for parabens to decide whether it belongs in this analysis. See what paraben-free means for what counts and what doesn’t.
These shampoos come from our full shampoo analysis; see the shampoo guide for what it includes and excludes.
Of the 808 paraben-free shampoos, 777 didn't meet the Welpr Standard. The main reasons were undisclosed blends, almost always fragrance, and potential contamination by 1,4-dioxane. Flagged ingredients were much less common.
67 of the 808 paraben-free shampoos listed at least one ingredient flagged by the Welpr Standard; the table below shows how often each appeared, which organization identified the concern, and why it was flagged.
| Flagged ingredient | Found in | Who flagged it |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc Pyrithione | 35 of 808 | European Commission · reproductive toxicant |
| DMDM Hydantoin | 18 of 808 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| Diazolidinyl Urea | 4 of 808 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| Isoeugenol | 4 of 808 | IARC (WHO) · possible carcinogen |
| Pentasodium Pentetate | 4 of 808 | European Commission · reproductive toxicant |
| Butylphenyl Methylpropional | 2 of 808 | European Commission · reproductive toxicant |
| Imidazolidinyl Urea | 2 of 808 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| BHA | 1 of 808 | U.S. National Toxicology Program · anticipated carcinogen |

774 of the 808 paraben-free shampoos had at least one disclosure gap or potential-contaminant flag.
Ingredient or Disclosure Gap | Found in | What the label can't establish |
|---|---|---|
Undisclosed blend | 755 of 808 | There's a blend of ingredients on the label, but the actual ingredients in the blend aren't disclosed. |
Potential contaminant | 663 of 808 | There's an ingredient that could contain a potential contaminant, but we have no way of knowing if the contaminant is there or not. |
Going paraben-free doesn't remove the 1,4-dioxane question. The most common carrier of this flag was Polyquaternium-10, a conditioning ingredient. Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, PEG-150 Distearate, and Polysorbate 20 also carried it. See the shampoo guide's 1,4-dioxane entry.
Fragrance remains the most common disclosure gap because leaving out parabens doesn't change how scent ingredients are disclosed. The shampoo guide's undisclosed blend entry explains how we handle that gap.
Does avoiding another ingredient change the picture? This table compares how often shampoos without each ingredient or ingredient family met the Welpr Standard.

Fragrance-free shampoos met the Standard far more often than paraben-free shampoos; sulfate-free and silicone-free options showed much smaller improvements. Undisclosed fragrance was the most common disclosure gap in the paraben-free group, so leaving it out addresses a major obstacle. See our fragrance-free shampoo guide for those picks.
Parabens are preservatives that help keep microbes from growing in shampoo. Here, paraben-free means no parabens appear on the analyzed ingredient list, including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. Ingredients such as hexamidine diparaben and polyparaben aren't counted as parabens despite their names. In the U.S., paraben-free has no specific legal definition for cosmetics, so we check disclosed ingredients rather than relying on the bottle's claim.
That check doesn't prove undisclosed constituents or trace contaminants contain no parabens. It also doesn't mean preservative-free or free of every other commonly avoided ingredient. On paraben-free shampoo labels, you may see other preservatives, such as phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, or potassium sorbate.
The table below shows the parabens we found on ingredient labels and how many of the 826 shampoos contained each.
| Ingredient | Found in |
|---|---|
| Methylparaben | 18 of 826 |
| Propylparaben | 11 of 826 |
| Ethylparaben | 7 of 826 |
| Butylparaben | 3 of 826 |
None of these parabens appeared in shampoos that met the Welpr Standard. See Is paraben-free shampoo better? for which parabens fail the Standard on their own.
Methylparaben-free and propylparaben-free claims each name a particular paraben the formula leaves out. Neither means paraben-free: a shampoo can omit methylparaben and still contain propylparaben, ethylparaben, or butylparaben, for example.
Paraben-free shampoo isn't automatically better. People choose it to match an ingredient preference, or because they have a confirmed allergy to a particular paraben. For the latter, follow your clinician's advice about which ingredients to avoid.
The trade-off is the preservation system, not necessarily how the shampoo cleans or lathers. Water-based shampoos need effective preservation to limit microbial growth, and alternative preservatives have their own potential for irritation or allergy.
The Welpr Standard treats individual parabens differently. Methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben don't cause a shampoo to fail on their own; butylparaben is flagged as a hazard. See the shampoo guide's butylparaben entry for more.
Our overall pick is the highest-ranked paraben-free shampoo that met the Welpr Standard.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
An unscented formula made for daily washing makes this a straightforward overall pick. It brings together plant, vegetable, flower, and tree extracts. The brand also markets it as eco-friendly.
Here are our picks for non-toxic, paraben-free shampoo by hair type and need:
Fine hair needs cleansing without heavy conditioning that can leave strands flat. Look for a lightweight or volumizing paraben-free shampoo, and avoid rich formulas if they leave your hair feeling coated.
Our pick: Vivacious Volume Shampoo - Acure
Designed for limp, flat hair, this shampoo adds lift, body, and fullness at the roots. Quinoa protein helps strengthen strands and reduce breakage, while mint and echinacea give the wash a refreshed, minty feel. Its cleansing formula is designed to clean without stripping. Still, some buyers report dry-feeling hair or a scalp that doesn't feel fully clean afterward.
Dry hair needs cleansing that removes buildup without leaving the lengths feeling stripped. Look for a moisturizing paraben-free shampoo with mild cleansers and ingredients such as glycerin, rather than a deep-cleansing formula for every wash.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
This moisturizing shampoo targets dry hair and leaves it feeling soft. It also helps restore lustre and shine. The brand markets the formula as natural and organic.
Curls often need more conditioning, while waves can lose their shape under too much weight. Look for a paraben-free shampoo with mild cleansers that leaves your hair manageable rather than rough. Lightweight formulas are a useful starting point for fine waves; richer formulas may suit coarse, dry curls better.
Our pick: Curly & Classy Shampoo - Pura d'or
Curl definition and bounce are central to this formula, which also addresses humidity and frizz. Its aloe-vera base moisturizes the scalp, while argan oil helps tame frizz. Buyers report softer, more defined curls that are easier to comb without a heavy finish. It builds into a rich lather, though some buyers experienced hair falling out after use.
Dryness and damage to the hair's outer layer can make frizz harder to manage, especially in humid air. Look for a moisturizing or smoothing paraben-free shampoo that leaves strands feeling supple, and follow with conditioner.
Our pick: Hydrating Cream Hairbath - Innersense
Raw shea butter and monoi oil help smooth texture, making this a fitting pick for frizzy hair. The rich, creamy formula restores hydration and softness to coarse or damaged strands, with avocado and tamanu oils adding moisture without weight. Buyers report softer hair after washing and say only a small amount is needed. Its fragrance combines sage and vanilla.
Choose a paraben-free shampoo for your hair texture and scalp needs rather than the word men on the bottle. A lightweight formula can suit short hair with oily roots, while dry or coarse hair may benefit from a moisturizing shampoo.
Our pick: Clarifying Hair Shampoo Lemon Leaves and White Tea - ATTITUDE
Marketed to men, this clarifying shampoo targets styling-product buildup, accumulated impurities, and excess sebum. Lemon leaf, watercress, and Indian cress extracts feature in the formula. Buyers report a light feel and a smoother, less frizzy finish. The scent combines apple with cucumber and Earl Grey notes.
Oily roots need enough cleansing to remove excess sebum without leaving a heavy coating. Look for a paraben-free shampoo aimed at oily hair, and consider a clarifying formula when styling-product buildup is also a concern.
Our pick: Clarifying Shampoo Bar - Ethique
Made for oily hair, this clarifying formula removes product buildup and leaves a clean, light, balanced finish. Castor seed oil and orange peel support deep cleansing without stripping moisture, while ginseng invigorates the scalp. It also lifts buildup from curly or textured hair without disrupting the natural curl pattern. Lime and orange give it a fresh citrus scent.
For a sensitive scalp, look for a paraben-free shampoo explicitly intended for that audience and avoid ingredients you know trigger a reaction. A fragrance-free formula is a useful starting point if scent ingredients bother you; the shampoo guide covers fragrance allergens in more detail.
Our pick: The Shampoo - Nécessaire
Designed for dry, sensitive scalps, this shampoo pairs gentle plant surfactants with hydrating ingredients. The formula includes hyaluronic acid, vitamins B3 and B5, and ApiScalp™. It is also marketed as fragrance-free and vegan.
Locs need thorough scalp cleansing and a shampoo that rinses out without leaving residue. Look for a clean-rinsing paraben-free formula, and avoid rich oils or heavy conditioning formulas if they leave buildup within your locs.
Our pick: Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo - Made For Locs
Designed for locs from starter stages through mature lengths, this shampoo removes residue, dirt, and oil while maintaining softness. Apple cider vinegar features in its buildup-clearing formula. It is also suitable for color-treated hair and is designed not to strip natural oils. The scent is Fresh Apple.
We cover paraben-free shampoo bars and liquid shampoo.
For more on the liquid format, see the shampoo guide’s liquid shampoo section.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
This is a liquid option for shoppers who prefer that format. The brand markets the formula as vegan. It also makes a cruelty-free claim.
For help choosing between soap-based and syndet bars, see the shampoo guide’s shampoo bar comparison.
Our pick: Scalp Health Shampoo Bar - Ethique
This solid bar takes up less shower space and has a shape buyers find easy to hold. Oatmeal, karanja oil, and neem seed oil feature in its scalp-focused formula, which works into a rich lather. It is suitable for color-treated hair and has a lime-and-earthy scent. Some buyers find their hair feels heavy or not fully clean afterward, and others say the bar doesn't last as long as expected.
