We analyzed 826 shampoos and 552 were silicone-free. Only 30 of those, around 5%, met the Welpr Standard, compared with 31 of 826 shampoos overall, around 4%.
| Assessment | Silicone-free shampoos | All shampoos |
|---|---|---|
| Meets the Welpr Standard | 30 (5%) | 31 (4%) |
| Does not meet the Welpr Standard | 522 (95%) | 795 (96%) |
Silicone-free shampoos were slightly more likely to meet the Welpr Standard than shampoos overall. But most still fell short, so choosing this option alone isn't a reliable shortcut to a shampoo that meets it.
When we say a shampoo is “non-toxic,” we mean it meets the Welpr Standard, our precautionary consumer standard; the shampoo guide explains what that means.
We reviewed ingredient disclosures published by brands and retailers between July 28, 2026 and October 11, 2026.
We checked each shampoo’s ingredient list for silicones before including it in this analysis. See what silicone-free means for what counts and what doesn’t.
These shampoos come from our full shampoo analysis; see the shampoo guide for what it includes and excludes.
Of the 552 silicone-free shampoos, 522 didn't meet the Welpr Standard. The main reasons were undisclosed blends, almost always fragrance, and potential contamination by 1,4-dioxane. Flagged ingredients were much less common.
31 of the 552 silicone-free shampoos listed at least one ingredient flagged by the Welpr Standard; the table below shows how often each appeared, which organization identified the concern, and why it was flagged.
| Flagged ingredient | Found in | Who flagged it |
|---|---|---|
| DMDM Hydantoin | 7 of 552 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| Diazolidinyl Urea | 6 of 552 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| Zinc Pyrithione | 6 of 552 | European Commission · reproductive toxicant |
| Pentasodium Pentetate | 4 of 552 | European Commission · reproductive toxicant |
| Butylparaben | 3 of 552 | ECHA · endocrine disruptor |
| Isoeugenol | 3 of 552 | IARC (WHO) · possible carcinogen |
| Imidazolidinyl Urea | 2 of 552 | Washington State Department of Ecology · formaldehyde releaser |
| BHA | 1 of 552 | U.S. National Toxicology Program · anticipated carcinogen |

520 of the 552 silicone-free shampoos had at least one disclosure gap or potential-contaminant flag.
Ingredient or Disclosure Gap | Found in | What the label can't establish |
|---|---|---|
Undisclosed blend | 501 of 552 | There's a blend of ingredients on the label, but the actual ingredients in the blend aren't disclosed. |
Potential contaminant | 416 of 552 | There's an ingredient that could contain a potential contaminant, but we have no way of knowing if the contaminant is there or not. |
Going silicone-free doesn't remove the 1,4-dioxane question. The most common carrier of this flag was Polyquaternium-10, a conditioning ingredient. Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Polysorbate 20, PEG-150 Distearate, and Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate also carried it. See the shampoo guide's 1,4-dioxane entry.
Fragrance remains the most common disclosure gap because choosing silicone-free doesn't change how scent ingredients are disclosed. The shampoo guide's undisclosed blend entry explains how we handle that gap.
Does avoiding another ingredient change the picture? This table compares how often shampoos without each ingredient or ingredient family met the Welpr Standard.

Fragrance-free shampoos met the Welpr Standard far more often than silicone-free shampoos. Undisclosed blends, mostly fragrance, were the most common transparency issue in the silicone-free group, so avoiding undisclosed fragrance addresses a major disclosure gap. See our fragrance-free shampoo guide for those picks.
Silicones help shampoo leave hair smoother and easier to detangle. Here, silicone-free means no silicone appears on the analyzed ingredient list, including dimethicone, dimethiconol, amodimethicone, or cyclopentasiloxane. The claim has no specific legal definition for U.S. cosmetics, so we check disclosed ingredients rather than relying on the bottle.
Silicone-free doesn't mean free of every conditioning or film-forming polymer. Labels may list other conditioning ingredients, such as polyquaternium-10; polyquaterniums aren't silicones, and neither is silica. This ingredient-list check doesn't establish that undisclosed constituents or trace contaminants contain no silicone.
The table below shows the silicones we found on ingredient labels and how many of the 826 shampoos contained each.

Amodimethicone was the only silicone in any shampoo that met the Welpr Standard. Shampoos containing it aren't included on this silicone-free page.
Dimethicone-free names just one silicone, not the whole group. A shampoo with that claim could still contain amodimethicone or dimethiconol. Likewise, amodimethicone-free doesn't rule out dimethicone or other silicones, so neither claim means the same as silicone-free.
Silicone-free shampoo can be a useful preference, especially if your fine hair feels weighed down or your curls lose bounce with richer formulas. People often choose it to avoid the coated feeling that some silicones can leave. For more on the term, see what silicone-free means.
The trade-off can be less slip and smoothing: silicones help reduce friction and make detangling easier. Other conditioning ingredients can provide those benefits too. How your hair feels depends on the whole formula, and silicone-free shampoo can still leave buildup.
A shampoo never fails the Welpr Standard just for containing a silicone. A silicone can carry another finding, though, such as a PEG silicone's potential 1,4-dioxane question. The shampoo guide's silicone entry covers that distinction.
Our overall pick is the highest-ranked silicone-free shampoo that met the Welpr Standard.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
Made for daily washing, this moisturizing formula is an easy fit for a regular hair-care routine. It brings together plant, vegetable, flower, and tree extracts. The unscented finish makes it a useful choice if you prefer shampoo without an added scent experience.
Here are our picks for non-toxic, silicone-free shampoo by hair type and need:
Fine hair needs cleansing without enough added weight to leave it flat. Look for a lightweight or volumizing silicone-free shampoo, and avoid rich oils and butters if they leave your strands feeling coated.
Our pick: Vivacious Volume Shampoo - Acure
This formula targets limp, flat hair with lift, body, and fullness, making it a focused choice for fine strands. Quinoa protein helps strengthen hair and reduce breakage, while mint and echinacea leave a refreshed, minty feel. Its sulfate-free cleansing formula is designed to clean without stripping. Still, some buyers report dryness after washing, and others say their scalp does not feel fully clean.
Dry hair needs cleansing that removes dirt and excess oil without leaving the lengths feeling stripped. Look for a moisturizing silicone-free shampoo with mild cleansers and ingredients such as glycerin, and follow with conditioner for easier detangling.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
This shampoo specifically targets dry hair with a moisturizing formula. It leaves strands feeling soft after washing. It also helps restore lustre and shine, making it a fitting choice when dryness comes with a dull finish.
The scalp's oils don't travel as readily along curls, so curly hair often needs extra conditioning, while waves can lose their shape under too much weight. Look for a silicone-free shampoo with mild cleansers and enough conditioning to keep lengths manageable. Lightweight formulas are a useful starting point for waves; richer ones may suit coarse or dry curls better.
Our pick: Curly & Classy Shampoo - Pura d'or
This curl-focused shampoo supports definition and bounce while addressing humidity and frizz. An aloe-vera base moisturizes the scalp, and argan oil helps tame frizz. It works into a rich lather with a lightweight, non-oily feel, and buyers report softer curls that are easier to comb without feeling weighed down. Some buyers experienced hair falling out after use.
Dryness and damage to the hair's outer layer can make frizz more noticeable, especially in humid air. Look for a moisturizing or smoothing silicone-free shampoo that leaves hair feeling supple rather than rough, and follow with conditioner.
Our pick: Hydrating Cream Hairbath - Innersense
This rich, creamy shampoo suits frizzy hair that also needs moisture, particularly coarse or damaged strands. Raw shea butter and monoi oil help smooth the texture, while avocado and tamanu oils moisturize without weighing hair down. Buyers report that previously dry hair feels soft after washing and that only a small amount is needed. Its fragrance combines sage and vanilla.
Choose a silicone-free shampoo for your hair texture and scalp needs rather than the word men on the bottle. A lightweight formula can suit short hair with oily roots, while dry or coarse lengths may benefit from a moisturizing shampoo.
Our pick: Clarifying Hair Shampoo Lemon Leaves and White Tea - ATTITUDE
Marketed for men, this clarifying shampoo is a useful fit for washing away styling-product buildup and excess sebum. Lemon leaf, watercress, and Indian cress extracts feature in a formula designed to restore shine. Buyers report a light feel and a smoother, less frizzy finish. The fragrance layers apple with cucumber and Earl Grey notes.
Oily roots need enough cleansing to remove excess sebum without adding unnecessary weight. Look for a silicone-free shampoo aimed at oily hair or oil control, and choose a clarifying formula when product buildup is also a concern.
Our pick: Clarifying Shampoo Bar - Ethique
This clarifying formula targets oily hair and washes away buildup left by styling products. Castor seed oil and orange peel support deep cleansing without stripping moisture, while ginseng contributes to a refreshed scalp feel. It leaves a clean, light finish with a lime-and-orange scent. It also suits color-treated strands and lifts buildup from curly or textured hair without disrupting the natural curl pattern.
For a sensitive scalp, look for a silicone-free shampoo explicitly intended for that audience, with mild cleansing and ingredients you already tolerate. If scent ingredients bother you, prioritize fragrance-free options; the shampoo guide covers fragrance allergens in more detail.
Our pick: The Shampoo - Nécessaire
Designed for a dry, sensitive scalp, this shampoo pairs gentle plant surfactants with a scalp-focused formula. It contains hyaluronic acid, vitamins B3 and B5, and ApiScalp. It is also fragrance-free and vegan, making those preferences easy to accommodate in a sensitive-scalp routine.
Locs need cleansing that reaches the scalp and rinses thoroughly through the hair without leaving residue. Look for a clean-rinsing silicone-free shampoo, and avoid rich oils or butters if they tend to build up inside your locs.
Our pick: Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo - Made For Locs
This formula suits locs from the starter stage through mature, long lengths. Apple cider vinegar helps cleanse the scalp and remove buildup, while the shampoo washes away residue, dirt, and oil without stripping natural oils. It maintains softness and is also suitable for color-treated hair. The scent is Fresh Apple.
We cover silicone-free shampoo bars and liquid shampoo.
For more on the liquid format, see the shampoo guide’s liquid shampoo section.
Our pick: Unscented Daily Moisturizing Shampoo - Carina Organics
This liquid shampoo fits shoppers who prefer that format and want a vegan formula. It is also marketed as cruelty-free and environmentally friendly. The brand describes the overall formula as natural and organic.
For help choosing between soap-based and syndet bars, see the shampoo guide’s shampoo bar comparison.
Our pick: Scalp Health Shampoo Bar - Ethique
This compact bar takes up less shower space and has a shape buyers find easy to hold. Oatmeal, karanja oil, and neem seed oil feature in its scalp-focused formula, which works into a rich lather. It is suitable for color-treated hair and has a lime-and-earthy scent. Some buyers find their hair feels heavy or not fully clean afterward, and others say the bar runs out sooner than expected.
